The Vertical Structure and Ultraviolet Spectrum of Accretion Disks Heated by Internal Dissipation in Active Galactic Nuclei

چکیده
We present an improved calculation of the vertical structure and ultraviolet spectrum of a dissipative accretion disk in an AGN. We calculate model spectra in which the viscous stress is proportional to the total pressure, the gas pressure only and the geometric mean of the radiation and gas pressures (cf. Laor & Netzer 1989: LN89). As a result of a more complete treatment of absorptive opacity, we find greater overall spectral curvature than did LN89, as well as larger amplitudes in both the Lyman and HeII photoionization edges. The local black body approximation is not a good description of the near UV spectrum. With relativistic corrections (appropriate to non-rotating black holes) included, we find that the near UV spectrum hardens with increasing ṁ/m8 (ṁ is the accretion rate in Eddington units, m8 the black hole mass in units of 10 8M⊙). The near UV spectrum is consistent with observations if ṁm 8 ∼ 10 , but disks this cold would have large, and unobserved, absorption features at the Lyman edge. The edge amplitude is reduced when ṁ/m8 is larger, but then the near-UV slope is too hard to match observations. We conclude that models in which conventional disks orbit non-rotating black holes do not adequately explain UV continuum production in AGN.

The Vertical Structure and Ultraviolet Spectrum of X-ray Irradiated Accretion Disks in Active Galactic Nuclei
Motivated by recent work indicating that the UV continuum in AGN may be produced by reradiation of energy absorbed from X-rays irradiating an accretion disk, we present a calculation of the vertical structures and ultraviolet spectra of X-ray irradiated accretion disks around massive non-rotating black holes. After finding the radial dependence of vertically-integrated quantities for these disk...

We argue that the X-ray and UV flux illuminating the parsec-scale accretion disk around luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN) is super-Eddington with respect to the local far-infrared dust opacity. The far infrared opacity may be larger than in the interstellar medium of the Milky Way due to a combination of supersolar metallicity and the growth of dust grains in the dense accretion disk. Becau...
متن کاملThe Variability of Active Galactic Nuclei and the Radial Transport of Vertical Magnetic Flux
We consider the radial buoyancy of vertical magnetic field lines in radiation and gas pressure dominated accretion disks. We find that in addition to radial drift driven by turbulent diffusion and biased by the global field geometry, there are buoyancy effects which tend to move magnetic flux outward. In gas pressure dominated disks the poloidal magnetic field will move outward at a rate compar...

1. Abstract Recent high resolution near infrared (HST-NICMOS) and mm-interferometric imaging have revealed dense gas and dust accretion disks in nearby ultra-luminous galactic nuclei. In the best studied ultraluminous IR galaxy, Arp 220, the 2µm imaging shows dust disks in both of the merging galactic nuclei and mm-CO line imaging indicates molecular gas masses ∼10 9 M ⊙ for each disk. The two ...
متن کاملThe Role of Thermal Conduction in Accretion Disks with Outflows
In this work we solve the set of hydrodynamical equations for accretion disks in the spherical coordinates (r,θ,ϕ) to obtain the explicit structure along θ direction. We study a two-dimensional advective accretion disc in the presence of thermal conduction. We find self-similar solutions for an axisymmetric, rotating, steady, viscous-resistive disk. We show that the global structure of an advec...
